THE MADRAS STAGE (Founder)

 

            Kavita Thomas Is a singer-songwriter- musician  and the founder of The Madras Stage. This laywer turned full time artist hit the big stage as a 5 year old and hasnt looked back since. With over 20 years working on her musicianship she has co-founded and fronted numerous successful bands like Chennais All Girl Rock Band Mantra, The Speakeasy Poets, ,The DIVA Collective to name a few and features on a variety of stages with numerous artists from the citry and beyond.She is a classically trained, Trinity College of London certified pianist taking her first lesson at the age of 3. She simultaneously learned Bharathnatyam and solidified her love for the performing arts.

 

             She spent her formative academic years in Canada, India and the U.S and her passion for the law had her pursuing her professional studies and completing a B.A., B.L. (Hons) Degree at the Madras Law College, School of Excellence in Law, and a postgraduate LLM in International Business and Commercial Law from the University of Manchester U.K. setting her up for a fruitful and successful legal career while still performing actively in the independent music circuit.  Eventually the music won and she found her way back to where she was meant to be full time. She now finds herself a full time sessions artist, lyricist, performer playing some of best stages in Chennai, Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore. 

 

            Founding "The Madras Stage" she programs, promotes and conceptualizes collaborations and performances at venues across the city of Chennai with a vision of further growth within the music industry and community.

 

              A short tryst with an acapella workshop at the Yale University Exploration Summer Program, New Haven Conneticut in 2002 piqued her love for vocal harmony and she has since been a member of various Vocal Ensembles and also coached and arranged for the IIT Chennai Acapella Team. She was also trained by Renowned piano teacher Gita Menon, Australian Musical Theatre Director Brian Laul  and Pianist Christrine Laul (Wizard of Oz, Australia). She is a graduate of the Swarnabhoomi Academy of Music learning from international superstars like gramy nominee Magos Herrera, Stevel Zerlin, Fabio Gouvea, Felipe Brisola, Alex Kautz, Peggy Larson, Dr. Ghatham Karthick, Phil Maturano and Nandini Srikar.

 

             She is a regular on the tribute stages lending her versatile voice to all types of genres from Jazz to EDM to Rock. She has also featured and collaborated with international artists such as Jovol "Bam Bam"  Bell, Parker McAllister, Steve Zerlin and Arcoiris Sandoval and playing some truly amazing stages. Besides fronting the various bands mentioned she is also known for her regular collaborations with some of the country’s most talented artists and renowned musicians. Most recently she has been launched by legendary Academy and Grammy Award Winning Music Director A.R. Rahman in his new vocal band NAFS featuring some of the industry's most promising talent. 

 

            Kavita’s voice has been featured in several jingles and ad’s (Anil, Joy Allukas, Lion’s Gate etc) since 2004 and to Tamil and Telegu Cinerma (Aah, Muni, Jambavan, Idhaya Thirudan etc) working with the likes of Vijay Anthony, Bharathwaj, Dharan, Sam CS  & Vishal Chandrashekar to name a few.

 

            Thomas was the voice of the 2013  TED-X Chennai’s theme song and the UN’s Theme for AIDS Awareness. Her track with Rapper and Songwriter Chacha Awad an ode to Sudan titled “Sudani” was released and played across radio stations in Sudan.  Stemming  from a gospel, jazz, musical theatre and a western classical background  she has embraced different styles and genres through her years as a musician. Thomas’s influences spread all across the board and she has performed them all ranging from country to RnB, Classic rock to hip hop and electronic music and her first love Broadway making her the versatile singer she is today.
